Queer Botany is hosting a botanical drawing session on Zoom with a focus on queerness and finding inspiration in nature. Participants must identify as a LBT Womxn. All skill levels are welcome.

This session will be hosted by Sixto-Juan Zavala (he/him), a practicing designer and illustrator from the United States currently enrolled in University of the Arts London Central Saint Martins’ MA Narrative Environments course. Zavala holds a B.F.A. in Communication Design and has worked in the creative field for ten years. He is especially interested in culture, marginalised groups, and the environment. See more of his work at sjzavala.com.

  • All participants need is a stable internet connection, a few sheets of paper, and pencil/pen, or whatever media they would like to express themselves.

  • The session is 1 hour and 30 minutes long.

  • There will be a short intro on botanical drawing and finding inspiration in nature.

  • Participants are encouraged to find their own house plants, fruits or vegetables in their homes, or pick some flowers or leaves from outside.

  • There will also be images of plants provided for anyone who needs it.

  • A warm-up with some brief exercises.

  • A longer session to draw/paint/write about the plant you are focusing on.

  • We will then share our work and see what others have done.

  • If anyone would like to say anything about their work they can, but are not obligated.
